Whether I was working in the garden, cleaning up chicken manure, or enjoying nature while riding my bike, there he was. As we grew up together, Nikki realized there was something different about me, that I was blind.ĭuring his nearly 10 years of life, Nikki was almost always with me. Nikki was a German shepherd that we got from a neighbor in 1973, when I was 8. We had several during my childhood, but none as special as Nikki. I grew up on a farm, and every farm has a farm dog. This interview has been condensed and edited.I’m remembering a very special dog in my life. We’re working out a date, but she’ll be on. You’re going to be bringing a lot of comedians onto your new show. I’m very grateful to have a friend like Amy who involves me in such insane situations like that. And obviously, it made us all sick because we wanted her to be awful, but she was wonderful. She was just a really cool chick, as cool as you’d think. It captured a really fun day for all of us, getting to hang out with her. Switching gears: What was it like to suddenly be famous on the Internet in a bikini when that human pyramid photo went viral? Being photoshopped into that was so amazing! No. That killed the mood for me, massage-wise. But as soon as the guy got a boner, that was when I was like: Okay, we need to cut this has gone too far. So it was very enjoyable in ways I’m maybe uncomfortable with. These guys just go at it! I like people to go to town on my feet. Did you enjoy that? Absolutely! There was a moment I was enjoying it, because my boyfriend will not rub my bunions. You visit a party for foot fetishists in the first episode and get a foot rub. There really is maybe one day in your life where your arms are the size men like that guy are okay with. And if they’re too skinny, you’re anorexic. If they have any kind of flab on them, they’re fat.

If your arms are too muscly, you get called a man. I’m trying right now to concoct a monologue in which I deal with the arm-flab situation. Now I only want to wear sleeveless shirts, and I want to gesture more than ever. But I’m glad it happened, because it really lit the fire under my ass to be like, fuck that! There’s nothing like being faced with that kind of misogyny, being talked down to in that way. I’m sad for him, that he thinks that way. Like, “you may not have noticed this about your body that you probably obsess about constantly because we make you do that.” It made me so mad that he thought he saw something I didn’t about myself. But it just made me sad that there are men who feel they’re watchdogs for our bodies. Luckily, I’m in an emotional state where I can handle comments like that and not be wrecked. I had an incident early on, where a guy on the crew remarked that I shouldn’t wear a sleeveless shirt, because my arms were doing the flabby thing. I’m doing a lot more weird stuff coming up. The more you work in this business as a comedian, the closer you get to just being yourself onstage, on camera, the more well received you are. I know that’s possibly the most cliché thing I could say. I realized going into this that I have to make a show that’s me, or it’s just not going to work. I went in there and didn’t hold back, really said things in front of Kent Alterman, the head of original programming at Comedy Central, that I never thought I would say in front of anyone. The show is going to work if you are as open as possible, and as excited about the subject as you are in real life. He was very adamant about me being myself.

Was Comedy Central at all squeamish? They really were on board right away. Tell me about the process of pitching this show.
